Restoration
5 Hargett Street
Terra Cotta Cornice
Raleigh, NC

Built in 1913, the Raleigh Building originally consisted of three floors and was commissioned by the Raleigh Banking and Trust Company, its original tenant. In 1930, eight additional stories were added atop the existing structure. In 1993, this monumental Neo-Classical building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. WxTite completed a comprehensive multi-phase restoration of the terra-cotta cornice on this historic Hargett Street building.

Phase One included an investigation to determine why a piece of the cornice modillion had broken away and fallen. The failure was attributed to severe rust jacking on the steel supporting the cantilevered terra-cotta cornice.

Phase Two included removing, cataloging, and cleaning all upper terra-cotta pieces; replacing the steel framing that anchors the cantilevered components; reinstalling the terra-cotta with new stainless steel and coated steel attachment anchors; and repointing all terra-cotta above the 11th floor. Two modillion pieces were beyond repair and were replicated by Boston Valley Terra Cotta. Upon completion of these replicated pieces, the team installed the final sections of the cornice.
